If you want to quickly assemble a few video clips or make a more complicated movie, iMovie is the perfect place to do it all. Plug in virtually any digital camcorder and iMovie starts importing your video. Drag and drop to create sophisticated edits, special effects, and smooth transitions. Integrate cool sound effects or add your own soundtrack made with GarageBand, then share your movie with the world. Here's an introduction to movie-making the iMovie way.

Look around the iMovie interface

Project Library-view the projects by title in a list view

Project Window- drag and drop pictures, videos, and audio in this window

Viewer Window- your movie will play so you may preview it here (to play movie click the spacebar)

iMovie Toolbar- tools and controls you will need as you work

Event Library-view the titles of videos and images

Events Window- shows previously loaded video clips

Getting Started

How do I insert images?

Click the camera button in the toolbar below the viewer, or choose Window > Photos.

Click on Photos, drag and drop pictures blank boxes.
How do I insert video?

Choose the video from your event library and click on it. Look to the right and click on a clip until it is selected and has a yellow border then you may drag and drop in your iMovie.

Click on the picture of the video camera to the left and you will be able to record directly from your iSight built in camera.
How do I insert audio?

Click on the microphone icon in the middle of the screen to record narration. Your narration will be represented by a purple bar.

To record background music or special sound effect click on the music note on the right. Simply choose your music/effect from the box and drag and drop it into your movie. You will see that each audio clip will be represented by a green bar.
How do I put title on my movie?

Click on the capital T on the right and click and drag a title on a clip in the project window. You will then be able to double click on the words in the Project Viewer Window to edit text.To see how the title looks, click the Play button in the upper-right corner of the viewer, then click Done. How do I create transitions?

How do I use other objects or backgrounds?

Click on the globe to the right and choose backgrounds, maps, and storyboarding placeholder images (called animatics).





Editing

How can I adjust my clips?

Click on the blue rectangle with the little wheel.
Clip Adjustment- This will allow you to adjust the clip duration and the clip effects
Video Adjustment- This allows you to adjust the exposure, brightness, contrast, and saturation of video.
Cropping, Ken Burns, and Rotation- This is where you will be able to manipulate the clip and control the movement and placement of the clip.
How can I adjust my audio levels?

On the audio bar in your Project Window notice the little wheel on each sound clip. Click here and choose Audio Adjustment. Here you can adjust the volume of the clip, reduce noise, and fade the audio clip in and out.
How can I split my clips?

In the timeline, select the clip you want to split. Position the playhead where you want to split the clip. Choose Modify>Split Clip. The clip is split into two clips.
How to extend or shorten a clip?

In the timeline, skim to the beginning or the end of the clip to be extended or shortened. To extend the clip, drag the edge of the clip left or right, away from its center. To shorten the clip, drag the edge of the clip left or right, toward its center.
How to trim unwanted frames from a clip?

In the timeline, position the playhead at the point to trim the clip. Position the playhead in the first half of the clip to trim from the beginning of the clip. Position the playhead in the second half of the clip to trim from the end. Control-click the clip, and choose Trim to Playhead from the shortcut menu.



Publishing

How do I publish my iMovie?
When your movie is complete you may publish it by going to Share>Export Movie or Export Using Quicktime

In iMovie, you need to go to the SHARE menu, choose EXPORT USING QUICKTIME, name it with no spaces, click the EXPORT: drop-down menu and choose MOVIE TO MPEG-4, and click the USE: menu and choose BROADBAND – MEDIUM.

DVD Burning and iDVD

Once you have Exported the finished movie using the SHARE menu, the movie can be burned to a DVD, if your computer has a DVD burner. If there is no DVD burner, the movie file will need to be moved to another computer with a DVD burner. This can be done by copying it to the server before transferring to a computer with a DVD burner. A thumbdrive can also be used to transfer the files between computers.

How to Know if Your Mac Has a DVD Burner

Use the System Profiler program in your Mac to find if you can burn DVDs and what disks to use.
  • Click on Apple in Menu Bar.
  • Click on "About This Mac".
  • In the window that opens, click on "More Info..." button.
  • The System Profiler program will open.
  • Depending on your version of Mac OS, click on either "Disk Burning" for Macs running OS 10.6 or older or click on the "Storage" tab for Macs running OS 10.7.

Uses for iMovie - Shared by Teachers in the Class

  • Record STEM challenges
  • Complete a historical piece on the location of where they spent their summer vacation. (ie Disney World, Minnesota, Clarksville, etc.)
  • I have used this for reading fluency.
  • IMovie is AWESOME! I would use it for students to work on fluency and readers theater. :)
  • I would like to use this in understanding punctuation. I would have my students find pictures and create a sentence.
  • Reading vocabulary or content key vocabulary.
  • This would be great to use as a back to school, get to know you activity.
  • Beginning of the year for routines and procedures or rules.
  • This would be great for the presentation standard and research writing portfolio piece (4th grade).
  • I will record performing ensembles in class. I can share their performances within the other 6-8 classes in their grade.
  • I'd like to record super sentences written as students look at a picture prompt.
  • I plan on using iMovie to create a movie for habitats. I plan on using the globes.
  • Partner introductions. Interview a partner and then create a short movie to introduce their partner to the class.
  • Allow them to critique video of themselves dribbling, bowling, shooting, swinging bat or racket, etc.
  • Students can create a weather report.
  • Presentation of an activity held at our school.
  • Students can become the teacher: video themselves doing the work as they explain the steps; I can place the movie on computers for other stu
  • Fluency checks
  • This is a great way for students to do an oral report. It helps eliminate being afraid of presenting in front of the class.
  • iMovie could be used to make vocabulary book with the weekly vocab words.
  • My students will be creating an advertisement for a product that they have designed.
  • Group research project. Find pictures together and have students record a fact they learned.
  • Edit home movies from vacation trips to show geography, history, etc.
  • Use iMovies in place of PowerPoints.
  • Make a movie about themselves- autobiography
